Shells and heads from shrimp (Pandalus borealis), otherwise referred to as the northern prawn is sourced from the north Atlantic (FAO area 27). The raw material is then cooked, dried and micro milled. 6009 shrimpshell powder is a pink to brown coloured powder and boasts a distinctive shellfish taste when dissolved in water. 6009 shrimpshell powder is a coarse powder with a 95% particle size of <1000μm. A finer powder with an 85% particle size of <106 µm is also available.
Shrimp and shrimpshell products have been used in a range of commercial aquafeed applications to for partial supplementation of fishmeal or where a species requires the dietary inclusion of specific raw materials. Examples of success with these species include the African catfish (Calarias gariepinus) and ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta).
In production of 6009 Shrimpshell powder, raw materials undergo processing in a manner that preserves the nutritional qualities and sensory characteristics of shrimp. Whilst providing an extended shelf life and re-assured food safety.
6009 shrimpshell powder comprises of 40% crude protein and 4.5% crude lipid (fat). However, much like most other marine resources, may be subject to negligible variation in nutritional profile, the range of which is in the accompanied product specification. Supplied in 15Kg quantities, 6009 shrimpshell powder has a best before shelf life of 15 months from production when kept in cool dry conditions.
With regards to fish and shellfish allergy and hypersensitivity, HACCP principals should be applied to prevent allergy risk and due to the nature and origin of the powder. Careful handling to prevent direct inhalation should be undertaken to prevent potential irritation as these products are not intended for consumption in concentrate dry powder form.
6009 shrimpshell powder is packaged in a hermetically sealed container and conforms to EC regulations 178/2002 and 852/2004 and does not contain any GM ingredients or processing aids under EC regulations 1829/2003 and 1830/2003
