Product Info
High quality raw material is sourced from the southwest Atlantic (FAO area 41). First class materials from the following species are then cooked, dried and micro milled:
• European squid (loligo vulgaris).
• European flying squid (tadarodes sagittatus).
• Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentines).
0278 squid powder is a lilac to mauve coloured powder that is suitable for human consumption and is ideal for applications such as soups, sauces and bouillons where this distinguishing flavour is required. Squid has also been a popular attractant and within angling baits, increasing palatability too. Squid proteins have also been used in low levels as a dietary supplement for commercial shrimp feeds in aquaculture, showing improved growth in comparison to fishmeal.
0278 squid powder typically comprises of 83-85% crude protein and 8-8.5% crude lipid (fat). However, much like most other marine resources, may be subject to negligible variation in nutritional profile, the range of which is in the accompanied product specification. 0278 squid powder is a fine powder with a 95% particle size of <106μm. 0278 Squid powder is supplied in either 10Kg or 2Kg quantities.
0278 squid powder is made using the tentacles and tails as opposed to the mantle, which although is used for the majority of seafood production, is more prone to autolysis, leading to higher levels of free amino acids and shorter peptides, notably the protein myosin. In production of 0278 Squid power, raw materials undergo processing in a manner that preserves the nutritional qualities and sensory characteristics of squid. These include the flavour, smell and protein content, whilst providing an extended shelf life of 15 months’ post production and re-assured food safety when kept in cool and dry conditions. Full product specification is available including amino acid profiles.
With regards to sustainability in a fishery where squid are both important predators and prey, Fishing vessels target adults and pre-adults in a sustainable manner. This is underpinned by pre recruitment surveys and in season depletion based assessments that will limit catch in order to meet targets regarding the biomass of spawning adult squid (otherwise known as escapement). Therefore, aiming to avoid any perturbations on species of other trophic levels.
With regards to fish and shellfish allergy and hypersensitivity, HACCP principals should be applied to prevent allergy risk and due to the nature and origin of the powder. Careful handling to prevent direct inhalation should be undertaken to prevent potential irritation as these products are not intended for consumption in concentrate dry powder form.
0278 squid powder is packaged in a hermetically sealed container and conforms to EC regulations 178/2002 and 852/2004 and does not contain any GM ingredients or processing aids under EC regulations 1829/2003 and 1830/2003
