Various industries have employed the use of Krill products over the years including:
• Products for Human food consumption and neutraceuticals.
• Animal feeds (predominantly aquaculture).
• The sports fishing industry, notably carp bait manufacture in the UK
Desirable nutritional qualities of krill include:
• high crude protein content
• Omega-3 fatty acids.
• vitamins
• natural carotenoid pigments
Krill has successfully been included as a highly palatable material within aquafeeds containing high levels of vegetable based alternatives to marine resources such as fishmeal and fish oil and those containing chemotheraputants and antibiotics. Improvements in processing methods have also rendered a lower concentration of unwanted elements in the end product.
Krill meal has proven a valuable part of dietary inclusion for aquafeeds and the sports fishing industry. When replacing or supplementing fishmeal within aquafeed formulations, diets have retained an optimum amino acid and fatty acid profile. Krill has been of importance to limiting increase in fishmeal use as the aquaculture production industry continues to grow.
Krill meal has successfully been used to supplement fishmeal in aquafeed production for various species such as rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
